Karva Chauth: Fasting for husbands' long life

Married women fast from morning for their husbands’ long lives on Karva Chauth. They end their fast in the evening only after seeing the full moon and break it after their husbands offer water and food to them. The custom is generally followed by north Indian Hindus.

On this day, women dress up in their best in traditional attire with mehndi on their hands and gorgeous attire. The festival is not only important for married women but also for newly-wed women.
Women sit in a circle and pass puja plate to each other even as the family’s most elderly women recite Karva chauth katha.Karva Chauth படங்கள்

A lady who has been observing Karva Chauth for the last 28 years shared its rituals. She says, “Karva means a small pot filled with water which is placed in front of Lord Ganesh. On this day, we worship Lord Ganesh for our husbands’ long life. After fasting for the whole day, we follow certain rituals in the evening before we take food or water. Married women who observe fast will see the moon through the sieve. After this ritual, they see their husband through the sieve.”

So, why do married women fast for their husbands? A woman says, “Married women consider their husbands as gods. So if devotees can fast for the Lord, then married women can definitely observe fast for their husbands.”

The most common fasts are

  • Surviving on water.
  • Eating only fruits and vegetables.
  • Eating only one meal a day.
  • Giving up non-vegetarian food.
  • Eating on alternate days.

Expert speak
“When you fast, a lot of toxins are released from the body,” Setalvad says. You will feel lethargic and moody, but those are just signs of toxics being released.
Nutritionist and fitness expert Asha Bachanni says fasting also helps in weight loss. “Carbohydrates and glucose in the body are used up during a fast. This then breaks down fat cells,” she says.
Fasting can help slow the aging process, adds Bachanni. “Normally, the body’s energy is used up by the digestion process. During fasting, the body focuses on cleansing, boosting the repair mechanism of the body,” she explains.

Singer Jagjit Singh: News

Jagjit Singh’s death at the age of 70 in Mumbai has shocked the music fraternity in Pune. Singers and music composers in the city were of the opinion that Jagjit had taken the magic of ghazals to the common man.

According to well-known composer Salil Kulkarni, besides being an excellent ghazal singer, Jagjit also had an extraordinary voice. “He was blessed with a soft and soothing voice, which was one of the best voices in our country. Ghazals were earlier limited to the elite, but he made it simple for the common man,” he said.

The Ghazal King" Jagiit Singh:

He put greater emphasis on melody and used Western instruments such as saxophones and guitars alongside Indian classical instruments, such as the tablaa and sitar, while sacrificing none of the emotional impact of the poetry," the report said.
Audiences have regularly been moved to tears by Singh's expressive Chithhi Na Koyi Sandesh, dedicated to Vivek, his only child who died in a car accident in 1990 at the age of 19.

Ministers not to quit

At any cost, 2014 is the deadline for the formation of Telangana state. The 2014 elections will result in Telangana, whoever forms the government at the Centre. So, creating a political crisis at this juncture is not warranted," said a Telangana minister. "So far the T-ministers in the cabinet have worked as shock absorbers as far as the movement is concerned. Once we step down, there will not be any voice to represent Telangana in the government and this may lead to the repression of the movement ," a senior minister told TOI.
